January Series: Marine Biology
Dive into the world’s biggest wilderness. Students investigate their way up the food chain with hands-on experiments and dissections. Our class will take us (virtually) from the Great Barrier Reef to the Arctic Ocean. Students learn ocean zones, food webs, water chemistry, and discuss human impacts.
February Series: Molecular Gastronomy (2/7, 2/14, 2/21)
Part chemistry, part cooking and wholly delicious! Molecular gastronomy is the latest trend in fine dining and restaurant cooking. We borrow tools and techniques from the science lab to concentrate flavors and present foods in unique forms. Bring your taste buds, creativity, and precision.
March: Energy and Wind Power (3/7, 3/14, 3/21)
From birds to plants, wind power is an ancient technology. Students investigate how wind has been utilized through time. We design a seed capable of being spread by the wind, a boat able to move across a small pond, and wind turbine blades for a model turbine. Physics and the laws of energy run through our conversations.
April: Ecology (4/11, 4/18, 4/25)
Relationships are key to understanding the natural world. Ecology is the study of these relationships and placing them in the context of the physical environment. We investigate relationships through games, experiments, and observations.
May: Habitats (5/2, 5/9, 5/16)
Your habitat is the place you call home. We spend most of class outside each week exploring the different ecosystems on the property. Prepare to get wet as we investigate quiet pools and fast moving riffles to uncover the always-changing ecosystem of a river. With sweep nets, magnifying lenses and bug books in hand, we’ll learn about the complex food web in our own meadow. The forest floor is teaming with living, breathing and hungry organisms. Students complete a detailed lab notebook filled with observations and sketches.
Outdoor Discoveries - 12pm-2:30pm, $40 per session 3 week session.
Ever wish you could stay and play longer? Now you can! Sign up for Outdoor Discoveries and stay for another two hours. Outdoor Discoveries is offered after every class during each session.
